Garbageland is a culmination of a vast variety of influences. The debut album by Pink Tip takes the listener on a kaleidoscopic 15-song journey of emotions, psychedelic absurdities and musical styles. Instruments ranging from strange synthesizers, electric and acoustic guitars, strings, garage drums, and trombone all support layered ensemble vocals. Feelings ranging from anger, sadness, sentimentality, and reflection are delivered with an almost detached whimsy and playfulness. At the core of the project is the philosophy of Jazz Punk. Garbageland pushes a rugged DIY approach to it’s outer limits, with sounds and performances that are reminiscent of the early days of punk all twisted into a deceptively well produced product. On the other hand, the formless freedom and commitment to new ideas hails from the heyday of jazz. This is evident in that the vast majority of the album’s material began as improvisation, overdubbed with on-the-spot takes. The result is a muscular project that balances it’s experimental nature with pop sentiments, and can hold a candle to anyone’s favorite alt-rock band.
